Tokyo is considerably more expensive than the rest of Japan. And more than anything else it depends on your lifestyle and whether you have any dependents. 300,000 yen per month will let a single person live a comfortable, simple lifestyle.

Depends greatly on where you live.

If you can deal with living in Chiba, for example, you can live in a 2-story apartment and pay 60,000 a month of a pretty large apartment, though you'll be 1 hour from the city.

It also depends if you cook often, sometimes, or not at all. If you cook often, you can get by with groceries for 20,000/month.

Add to that mobile (10,000), internet (6,000), utilities (20,000), misc (10,000) and you can live in/near Tokyo off 120,000 yen/month. So even if you have a salary of 180,000/month after taxes, you'd be able to save a little every month.
This is a very common scenario.

That's the bare minimum you need but even a few lifestyle changes and change of location can make 300,000 or even 500,000 fell like you'll living check to check.
