Who owns Japanese temples? 2010/3/9 14:38
I recently followed a news story about a priest who bought a large insurance policy on a temple and then burned it down. Are temples the personal property of the priests? Maybe some temples? Perhaps large famous temples belong to particular sects, and smaller temples where the position of priests often passes from father to son are privately owned? And the associated graveyards? How are temple expenses financed? And shrines? (but that's another question!) Thank you!

It depends on each temple or shrine 2010/3/9 19:02
It depends on each temple.
I suppose many temples are property of religious corporation.
Some religious corporations have been founded by sects. Other religious corporations have been founded by each temple or individual monks. In latter case a few monks may tend to regard temple as if his own property.

A few small temples, a pretty number of graveyards, most of Jizo statue on roadside, belong to local community.

Shrines are in same circumstances. But a pretty number of small shrines belong to local community.
