Holding mail while away? 2010/3/14 20:50
Is it possible to get the post office to hold your mail for a period of time? I know you can do it in the States, but my Japanese isn't good enough to find anything about it on their website, mainly because I'm not even sure what to look for.

Normally I wouldn't worry about it, because I get so little mail, but I have a small package I've been expecting that looks like it's been held up and won't arrive before I leave, and I think the post office only holds undeliverable packages for a week. I'll be gone for 10 days, and I'm plagued with visions of it arriving the day after I leave.

So, is there a way to have them hold my mail for awhile?

No problem. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the form you need to get, but it's easy to fill in and they'll begin re-delivery on the date you specify. It's free, by the way.

You can go to the nearest post office and turn in a "fuzai todoke" - something like "absence notice" "away-from-home notice."

The form is this one (in Japanese):

Explanation (in Japanese):

You fill in the form specifying from what date to what date you'll be away.
You need to take an ID with you, so your alien registration card should do.
