Suffixes at work? 2010/4/4 03:06
Hi,

In most companies, how are employees called? Just by their last name? Last name & some suffix attached? Something else?

I started a new job recently. At this company, my boss calls most of the Japanese employees by their last names, except for a few who he is close to. With those people, he calls them by their first name alone, their first name plus "-chan" or "-san," or by a nickname.

With the foreign employees, my boss calls us by our first names since it seems easier to pronounce. I'm not close to my boss, but he calls me by my first name and "-chan." He doesn't do that to the other foreign employees, though, because they're men.

Is it common to call someone "-chan" at work, even if you are not close?

Thank you~
