wrapping host gift right

Son is bringing gifts from U.S. for host family in Japan. Can't bring wrapped things on plane (security), but it would be difficult to wrap nicely (scissors, tape, ribbon, etc.) at the airport. It shoud be ready to give as soon as he reaches host family. Is a nice gift bag (with colorful tissue paper inside) o.k.? What have YOU done about this?

Not that I have firsthand experience preparing a gift to be presented right at the airport, but sure, a nice gift bag is fine :)
