How do you say spend the night? I was thinking it's いえ に とまる。but dosent tomaru mean stop?

There are many same written hiragana or same sounding words.
In this いえ に とまる, tomaru is 泊まる, stay a night。
Other tomaru are:
stop=停まる, like in 停車, a bus stops.
end=止まる、growth ends/stops/halts.
notice=留まる like an impression.
