switching visa status for JR pass?

has anyone had experience with changing their visa to temporary stay while giving the reason 'to be able to travel using the JR pass'? I graduate after my study abroad program, but my student visa is good until next March. Since there is no particular reason why a student cannot go sightseeing, would I have to leave the country without getting a reentry permit instead and come in on a temporary visa? or are they generally quite lenient towards these kinds of requests?

I have heard of people changing to a tourist permit while still in Japan from a student or work visa. It seems that in most cases Immigration is quite happy to do this.

Maybe you should change your reason to "to travel around Japan after studies"
