Working at Starbucks Japan 2010/7/18 08:50
Hi guys,

I've been a barista for quite some time now and got informed by my store manager that it's possible to work in other Starbucks stores over the world. That really got my attention and I really want to try working in Tokyo for a while.

However, I can't seem to find anything online on where to apply and how the process goes, so I'm wondering if anyone has any information about that :)

Thanks so much!

From your question, I assume you are working at a Starbucks location in your home country. Then you will need to ask your manager to ask his/her manager about the process for inter-company transfer to Japan :) This would be a company internal issue, I believe.

Highly unlikely. Any type of inter-company transfer for Japan would be at the management level at corporate offices not at front line or franchised stores.

I do not think Japan will easily issue out "Specialist in Humanities" or IntraCompany Working Visas to front line Starbucks employees.

-----------
Intra-Company Transferee Visa is, generally, a status of residence required when a worker of a foreign company is transferred from the headquarters to a branch in Japan. Or if a worker of a Japanese company is being transferred from a branch overseas to the headquarters in Japan.

Activities on the part of personnel who are transferred to business offices in Japan for a limited period of time from business offices that are established in foreign countries by public or private organizations which have head offices, branch offices or other business offices in Japan and who engage at the business offices in the activities described under "Engineer" or "Specialist in Humanities/International Services."

In short, I don't think a barista qualifies.

There is another problem about inter-company transfer, Starbucks Japan is a joint venture between Sazaby League and Starbucks Coffee International. The big boss is japanese and even if I saw some chinese or korean at counters of MacDonald's in Tokyo I have never seen any foreigners working at Starbucks here in Japan. I go to Starbucks in many locations in Tokyo even the Roppongi store is 100& japanese staffed.
