Kyoto cafes for study and espresso?

Any suggestions on good cafes for studying and hanging out near Kyoto Station or the Saiin Station? Navigating the bus system has been a NIGHTMARE so far in Kyoto (while I'm at it, am I missing something regarding the buses? The maps are so complicated and not all the buses seem to be on there!) but those are two of the places I know how to get to.
