my japanese guy friend said this to me - what is the meaning of this phrase? why did he use 'kimi' and not 'omae'/'anata'?

It means "YOU can do it" with the emphasis on "you."

What pronoun does he normally use with you? Assuming you are a girl, a guy saying "omae" to you sounds too masculine and too overbearing, and "anata" can sound too feminine lol. It also depends on how close you are to each other, though. "Kimi" can be somewhat emotionally neutral, and neutral when it comes to masculine/feminine, and it may be used when you want to sound matter-of-fact.
