I am arriving in japan on frida, sep. 17th and i want to go see a sumo match on sep 20th. for arena seats do i need to buy tickets in advance? if so where is the best place to do so, from abroad or from japan?

As a rule of thumb, the stadium sells out on weekends and national holidays, but does not sell out on regular weekdays. September 20, 2010 is a national holiday, so I strongly recommend to make advance reservations. For reasons that are beyond me, the official ticket website of the sumo association has already stopped selling tickets on September 6. But you should still be able to get your tickets here: http://www.buysumotickets.com/
