anything like a 'goshiwon' in Japan? 2010/10/22 08:31
I 've lived in Korea for a couple years, but am considering a move to Japan.

If any of you know about Korea, then you might be familiar with these cheap dorm-like arrangements called goshiwons, which consist of very small rooms that require no deposit, no utility bills, and no minimum number of months (just pay month to month). They have shared bathrooms and showers in the hallway. When I stayed at one of these, it was only $300 (usd) per month, but rent can be cheaper or higher.

If there is such a thing in Japan, what is the price range? Or is this only a Korean thing?

You can find the same type of "dorm" apartments in Japan for the same type of pricing.

Availability is another issue...

Sakura House might be able to help.
The rent is not as cheap as a goshiwon.

Wasn't there an ad for Sakura House somewhere on Japane-Guide?
I have one on my website: http://apartment-japan.com but the link above is much more direct. They have English speaking staff so give them a call.

jmarkley,
That site may come in handy for me! Thanks!

kyototrans,
Thanks for your answer. Are these rooms actually in short supply? In Korea they're very easy to find. Do you know the word for this type of room in Japanese, and any tips on locating them (aside from the link jmarkley just gave me) ?

Thanks again
