Hi everyone, I am currently applying for a scholarship to study in Nagoya Uni. I would like to know the expenses for the following, as I am required to fill them during the application:

1) rent (hostel or not)
2) Utilities
3) Insurance (health & property)
4) Food
5) Transportation
6) Medical expenses
7) Clothing
8) Recreation
9) Other expenses

Thank you in advanced! :)

1) rent (hostel or not)
Student housing is usually available for less than 50,000 yen/month depending on multiple factors associated with renting any apartment.

2) Utilities
Living by yourself, utilities (gas, water, electricity) should be less than 20,000/month

3) Insurance (health & property)
20,000 yen every two years for renter's (fire) insurance and health insurance for students should be less than 5000/month.

4) Food
Depends on a lot but 30,000/month is safe

5) Transportation
Depends on location but 10,000/month is safe as you get a student discount.

6) Medical expenses
Insurance is covered above. Dental visits every three months: less than 1500 yen per visit.

7) Clothing
Who knows, 5,000/month?

8) Recreation
Again, who knows, 10,000/month?

9) Other expenses
Additional 1-30,000/month?

Handphone? 2010/10/28 13:34
How about handphones? I heard the range is from 5000-7000 but what about the credits what are they and where do I buy them? How much do I pay each month roughly? Although it's difficult to say how much I will use...

prepaid phones 2010/10/28 14:15
Prepaid phones start at 5000 yen for the handset. Credit can be bought in 3000 to 5000 yen increments and is valid for 60 days. Calling costs about 100 yen/min (charged in 6 sec incremnts) and unlimited mail costs 300 yen per month. With careful usage, basically using the phone mainly for email, you could go the entire 60 days on 3000 yen credit.
