Etymology of the word tonfa

Is anyone familiar with the etymology of the word "tonfa" (as in the wooden martial arts weapon from Okinawa)?
It cannot be Japanese with "fa", right?
As an aside, am I crazy, or did police in the US used to carry those back in the '80s, but now you never see them. ??

It cannot be Japanese with "fa", right?I'm not sure about the entymology, but the current Tonfa probably comes from the old Okinawan language which seems to have a hwa/fwa sound in it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okinawan_languageAs an aside, am I crazy, or did police in the US used to carry those back in the '80s, but now you never see them. ??The version carried by US police is called a nightstick and continues to be standard issue is many jurisdictions.
