Meeting a Japanese Girl, buy a gift?

Hello!
I'll be meeting a Japanese penfriend I've been emailing for a while now.
Is it a good idea to get a small gift?
I know Japanese culture likes giving gifts to friends, visiters, etc, etc.
Although it might not be a good idea for her to carry a gift throughout the day, and also listening to women's opinions, most suggest it's not a good idea. However, it is different in Japanese culture? Gift is classed as a good gesture and nothing more?

You are free to bring along a gift, but you don't have to.
I've met about 4 or 5 penfriends in the past, either Japanese or foreign people who are/were residents in Japan, and none brought gifts.
If you do bring a gift, don't let her carry it around unless it's tiny. Typically, people would hand it either as they say good-by or at the last place they sit down for tea or meals.
Hope you have fun!

Thank you very much for your answer. It turned out extremely well. I can't tell you what I gave her (just in case she is reading this), but I sense she liked it a lot. The whole day is the best day this year! Thank you!
