Moving company tips? 2010/12/18 10:58
Is it expected or usual to give a tip to the moving company staff after the job is finished and settling up the bill?

If yes, what would be a suitable tip for say 3 staff members?

Danny,

No tipping them is not commonly done. Some moving companies (such as Hikkoshi-sha) even offer you a "you can ask us to do anything you want for the last 10 minutes" service.

In my parents' generation, people used to offer sushi delivery, but nowadays, the moving company people just seem to suddenly disappear to nowhere for lunch so that the customers won't have to worry about it. Of course, you are free to hand them canned juice or something.

If it is a small local moving co., give some(10-20,000yen) in an envelope to the foreman to divide depending on how hard they had to work. Some of them are student arubaito (part timer) like I was.
