It takes 10 years straight to get permanent status for Japan. My question: if I were on my 9th year, and had to leave Japan for a year due to an emergency... I would have to start the 10 years all over again? Seriously?

This is just a rule of thumb for those not married to a Japanese spouse. Some people can get it much earlier. Others don't get it even after ten years.

If you leave the country on a re-entry permit and return to Japan, while the re-entry permit is still valid, your time in Japan will not be "reset". Otherwise, I believe it would.
