Host family gifts 2011/4/30 12:29
My son is going to spend 2 weeks with a host family. Any ideas for gifts from the Boston area? We do not know who the host family is yet.

Items that either represent your town/state/country are generally good gift ideas for host families.

Local candy or foodstuffs are especially popular with Japanese hosts. I would suggest anything traditionally produced in your country, with nice packaging and not too challenging a taste. Because Japanese homes don't have a lot of space to store stuff, they really appreciate gifts that can be eaten and don't need to be stored :)

Other ideas: Wallets for men, tea-towels for women, small keyrings or phone accessories for young/teen girls, tshirts or hoodies from the local university/town or are always popular with male hosts,

Japanese people also put a lot of effort into the presentation of their gifts. If you receive something from your host family, it will likely be wrapped in decorative paper, bows, ribbons and gift bags. So returning the favor is always appreciated.

How about Boston Red Sox (or Dice-K Matsuzaka) key chains or something like that?
