I recall you mentioning somewhere else that you have a prepaid softbank phone. If that's the case then both sms and s-mail are included in the 300 yen unlimited mail service, so using either is free when sending messages to other softbank phones. You might want to get accustomed to using s-mail (mms) when texting within Japan though as it works essentially like email and has none of the restrictions of sms. http://mb.softbank.jp/en/prepaid_service/unlimited_mail.html
