Going to my friend's house. Present? 2011/6/11 02:49
Hi.

I'm an American student (guy) living in Japan. I've made a friend that invited me to go see a movie at her house one of the coming days, and I'm wondering if I should bring a present.

She gave me sweets that she had baked earlier, so I feel like I should show my appreciation. Speaking in Japanese is fine, but when it comes to customs I have little knowledge. What would be suitable to give her?

The girl is a friend, and not a romantic interest.

Take some cakes, Japanese sweets or fruits. Maybe a bottle of inexpensive wine if she drinks. In general, we take foods when invited to other peoples' homes.

I agree with Tokyonet, and since you seem to be a young student, something worth a few hundred yen to 1000 yen the most should be enough. Just bring something you like.
