I have been twice not going this year though.
Prepare for rain or sun.
It can get really muddy if it rains so don't bring
Your favorite new white leather sandals.
Check out the little performances around food area not just the big main stages,
Watch the staff if they are busy and shuffling around behind the tent some big star maybe about to come and do a mini live, they are often just acoustic sessions
but can feel much more intimate with a crowd of just 20 or so, these are unannounced so you wont find them in a program.
If you are camping get there early or else you will have to pitch your tent on a steep bit of hill and will wake up feeling like you are in a sack of potatoes clinging to the hill on one last tent peg.
The showers are cold (of course), not a lot of privacy and so many people queueing. Have a thorough good wash at home before you leave and try to stay clean.
Have fun!

onsen! 2011/7/1 11:36
Lots of young japanese groups head to one of the many onsens around there after the festival. For example one day festival ticket camp the first night (friday or sat) then head to the onsen the following day with your buddies to relax your aching muscles, and generally make the most of being in the countryside.
