From what I understand, the best Japanese style tattoo artists have waiting lists that are years long, and some require referrals to even get an appointment. So you may need to do a lot more research depending on what you are looking for.

I have not been to any, but these are the ones that usually get recommended here and on other forums. The artisits Gotch and Gakkin at http://www.harizanmai.jp/in Kyoto are often recommended. You can see galleries of their work on the website. Google them for some more information/ recommendations. You will probably need to make a booking to see them, so I suggest you do that well in advance, either via e-mail or by phoning them. Also try and determine if what you want can be done in one sitting or not. Chopstick Tattoo in Osaka http://www.chopsticktattoo.org/index2.php are another popular choice and have been around for a long time. Again, google is your friend. Other options include Finleine in Yokohama. http://finelinejp.com/home.htmlor Rat Tattoo in Tokyo. http://www.inkrattattoo.com/main.htmlGood luck!
