Similarity of US and JP I-Pad Models

Hi All,
Can anyone tell me if an I-pad from the US is esentially the same as the ones in Japan? Do they run the same OS and function the same? Aside from the langauge, will the display be the same? Can You simply change the 'region/langauge' of a US I-Pad to japanese and will it 'make sense' to a japanese person?
any help on thse lines, Thanks!

The wifi models are exactly the same. The only difference is that ipads bought in Japan are $100 more expensive than their US counterparts.
3g models are slightly different as Japanese models are carrier locked to Softbank, while the US models come unlocked but tied to certain types of networks.
