Hi,
* I have an iphone 4s and I want to call my partner with iphone 4s as well.
* We are both with Vodafone Australia.
* I wonder what is the number format? e.g. 0011 61 xxx xxx xxx?

Not so sure Vodaphone will have roaming rights in Japan: my cousin had Vodaphone and was unable to use it in Nov 2010.
+61 ...... should do it.
If you have access to free wifi then facetime is a good idea.
Also consider Skype: roaming is VERY expensive.
