The customs form ask you to declare if you have one million yen or more (or equivalent in other currencies), so if you tick "yes" they would ask you questions what for, etc.

You can always use an ATM to get cash and credit cards to pay for lots of stuff..

Yes thanks - I found on previous visits that the Post Office ATMS accepted European c cards
