Markets in Tokyo like Nishiki-Dori in Kyoto? 2012/5/9 03:17
Really enjoyed the Nishiki Dori Market in Kyoto lat year, but unfortunately I will only be in Tokyo this year. Are there any similar markets, local food events in Tokyo?

Each of the old neighbourhoods around Tokyo has their own shopping street or version of a market - to varying degrees of size & quality. Many of the old shopping streets are disappearing or have lost their character due to the spread of supermarkets and also because, consumers needs have changed substantially.
Kyoto's Nishiki is quite concentrated and therefore pretty good (because Kyoto is really just a big country town, nothing on the scale of Tokyo's huge population.) As the poster above said, you could visit Tsukiji they have fish and lots of it, also some chefs supplies shops - but it's a bit different from Nishiki.
Actually in Tokyo after Tsukiji just visit some department store basements, B1 & B2 they are the modern equivalent of a nishiki market. You get more variety & quality there than on the street.

The Tokyo equivalent of Nishiki Market would be Tsukiji Outer Market, occupying several square blocks north of the main Inner Market. It's open to the public and it's filled with shops and stalls selling produce, meat, fish, tea, miso, etc. as well as kitchenware. There are also a few excellent knife shops that cater to both professional chefs and consumers.

Try to get to Tsukiji in the morning - some shops tend to wind down after around noon, and lots of places close at 3 or 4.

Also, as Lisa says above, do check out some department-store food floors. Some good ones include Seibu Ikebukuro (the biggest), Isetan in Shinjuku (the poshest), and Tokyu Foodshow in Shibuya (fantastic variety).
