Dance question? 2012/5/24 02:55
So i'm interested in clubbing in Japan and i want to know how the Japanese dance to hip hop music. As you could imagine, I'm used to grinding and freak dancing. I can't even find any YouTube vids on it so i turning to Japan guide for help on the subject. My question(s) are 1) do they do this dance in japan 2) if yes whats the Japanese word for it? 3) if no what kind of dancing do they do 4) is there certain etiquette i gotta follow? 5) are these questions weird to ask? Thanks in advances.

Hiya,

1) do they do this dance in japan

Yes. Since the early 1980s,. so many hip hop songs have been created also in japan.

2) if yes whats the Japanese word for it?

You can use the word "hip hop" also in Japan.
Usually its literal translation word into Katakana is widely used:@ƒqƒbƒvƒzƒbƒv

These are some example hip hop songs widely known in Japan:

Dragon Ash - Deep Impact (2000)

EAST END~YURI - MAICCA (1995)

EAST END~YURI - Da yo ne (1995)

Scha Dara Parr - Otona ni Nattemo (1997)

5) are these questions weird to ask?

No, your questions aren't weird at all.

Hi Jablk

that you for your anwsers

My pleasure.

but i meant do they have a word for freak dancing/grinding and do they do freak dancing in japan.

Is what you mention something like this?:

If so, my answer is "I don't know this style of dancing." Most ordinary Japanese will answer in the same way. People here has no word for it.

Maybe some of the people here don't like this kind of dancing style because of
cultural reasons (men and women here in Japan generally avoid touching their
bodies each other).

But,
I have often seen in Japan these styles of dancing:
Para Para-style dance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-fKsk446Rg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbQdqOnCBzM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYqjeB7Q-g4
Para Para is a style of dancing mainly using your hands up and down, or right and left.

Juliana's Tokyo-style dance (dancing with a Japanese fan in their hands)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kypqOXR1kHI
Juliana's Tokyo was a famous music club in the early 1990s (already closed down)
This dancing style was considered to be too radical in these days.

Are there any other questions to me?

I'm not familiar with the club scene in Japan, but I would say they don't grind/freak dance like people do in the states... for the very reason the guy above me said, it's not natural interaction between men/women there, especially in public. There may be exceptions, but I would say most Japanese clubs don't do it or at least have more space between dancing partners. If you want that kind of dancing, your best bet is probably to check out the areas of Roppongi that are popular among foreigner community. Some of those clubs are probably more Americanized. But again, I'm not really familiar with the club scene in Japan. I'll find out later this year.

I think "BBoy" might be a useful search term for you. I had a quick scope round and I am guessing this is the sort of vibe you are asking about:

Don't know the venue and it's not personal choice of club style or music so I can't add any details expect to observe that it does look like a club heavily patronised by non-Japanese so probably that is the key. If you can familiarise yourself with the scene before you go and maybe get in touch with someone from it, that's your best bet for finding the clubs.
