college life for an exchange student in japan

hi i was just wondering what college life is in japan. is it similar to the states where there are frat houses and parties or not. plus are all of the classes in japanese? the reason why im asking is because i heard someone who went to the university of michigan and she did a semester of study abroad in japan and she said all of her classes are in english

Generally, college students here in japan are quiet and shy; but they are thoughtful, polite and earnest. You may feel they are sometimes conservative. It may be a bit long time to make a friend there, but after spending for several months there, you will find that people around you (including teachers) are all kind and friendly (no violent students and no students with guns)

No, not all of the classes in japanese.
Some (not many) of the classes are in English. Usually, this is when the lecturer can speak English. In Tokyo, it's not so difficult to find a college class for English-speaking people.

In "ordinary" Japanese colleges, of course the classes are in Japanese (except for their English language lessons). Overseas students usually attend Japanese language schools for a year or two to reach a level where they can pass the entrance exam and keep up with lectures given in Japanese.

There are some universities that are relatively speaking "easy" for English-speaking students to attend, for example, Temple University in Japan is an American university in Japan, and ICU or Sophia University have special department for English speakers.

You would want to find out exactly which college she went to. And also if it was only a semester, it could have been an exchange program, where it was arranged so that she could attend lectures held in English only.
