Study gold & silversmithing in Japan 2012/5/31 19:47
Hey
Do you know if it is possible to study gold and silversmithing in Japan as a foreigner?
And where would you study it? The system tends to vary between countries, in some it is a design-aimed university but in others tradeschools and internships is the way to go.

Any short term courses would also do?

Any help on the topic would be a big help.

there are many technical colleges and specialty schools offering jewelry design / gold/silversmithing courses.

they range from long term 4 year degrees down to short weekend courses. they all tend to be expensive. you generally have to pay extra for materials and tools as well, but sometimes it's included in the overall course cost.

the big problem is being able to understand japanese at a level high enough to participate usefully in such a course. you'll need JLPT 2 or better to actually understand what's going on and many schools won't even let you join without JLPT2 or JLPT1.
