Fish Markets dates 2012/2013 2012/6/29 06:57
We are visiting Japan from dec 27th to Jan. 8th.
I am trying to find out whether the fish market will be open on any of these days.
The current dates on Japan.guide.com are for 2011-2012.

I assume you refer to Tsukiji Market.

The market will be open from December 27 to 30, but closed on the 31st. The 2013 calendar has not been published yet, but I am pretty sure that the market will be closed from January 1 to 4, open on the 5th, closed on the 6th, and open on the 7th and 8th. If not exactly that way, then similarly.

You didn't specifically ask, but note that the Tuna Auction is likely to be closed to tourists during that timeframe.

Uji posted these dates in another thread:-
Tuna Auction closed:-
From December 15, 2008 to January 17, 2009
From December 10, 2009 to January 23, 2010
From December 1, 2010 to January 22, 2011

Hope this helps

Thanks for your replies, yes I did mean the Tsukiji market. its great that it will be open during our stay, I had read in your previous responses that the tuna auctions would most likely be closed during these dates.
Does it matter what time you get to the market?

Does it matter what time you get to the market?

Theoretically you can't enter the wholesale area before 9am. Assuming you want to eat Sushi I suggest you arrive earlier (7:30?) and then queue up for Sushi at one of the restaurants in the market. The queues for the more popular ones (Daiwa Sushi, Sushi Dai etc.) are often at least an hour long. Then eat Sushi for breakfast and then enter the markets once it reaches 9am.

There are other options for Sushi if you don't wish to queue.

You can also enter the Outer Market area before 9am too. Either before or after Sushi breakfast!
