Will my iphone 4s and ipad2 charge in Japan, will i be able to use my 3g to pick up mails and phone to SOuth Africa, can i do it with a local service provider sim card?

They should charge just fine. You may need to pick up a Japanese usb charger (I got one in Akihabara for very little). My UK iPhone 3gs on O2 picked up softbank when I took off airplane mode & I got a text before I switched it back on.
