If you're accent isn't a problem, you should be fine.

If I'm not mistaken, Japanese students are required to know Tokyo-ben as it is the official language/dialect.

As for the British English in America comment... accent-wise yes we will understand you, but if you use British vocabulary then no. Although, there are some parts of America where even the British accent will be too much.
