Japanese Pronunciation

So, I've watched anime over the years and I noticed that (at least on TV) japanese pronunciation is very well marked, sometimes it almost feels like they are singing, so important the tone seems to be.
I just wanted to know if people on the street really speak like that or if that's TV stuff, because I sure do not want to sound ridiculous when exercising what little japanese I know.

While intonation (up-and-down kind of accent, instead of, stress/emphasis in English, for example) is important, no, people don't talk/yell like they do in anime in real life :)
