what is the current rate of exchange in Japan 2013/1/11 13:15
Looking to exchange my Australian dollars to yen and just wondering if anyone knows what the rate of exchange is within Japan at this time. I did a bit of research and the rate of exchange within Australia is only 88yen to the dollar instead of the maximum 94yen to the dollar.

The online exchange quotes an estimate only. On ground, 1. the counters will give slight variation in buying AUD based on analysis forecast and 2. depends if the agency has excess or deficit in a particular currency.

You will not have an accurate exchange rate until you arrive at the counter. Look around different places, you might find a better rate.

Or use ATM.

This is the best for me, since I use T/Cs and it's only one yen off the "official" rate for US$.

You did? Where?

Assuming you are in Melbourne:-

Alternatively, get a decent card for use overseas, such as a Citibank Plus Account, or a 28 Degrees card, both of which don't charge a foreign exchange fee and have rates close to the spot rate. Then just use the ATMs in Japan to withdraw:-

You've misunderstood the concept of exchange rates. The "maximum" as you called it is the exchange rate, NOT the selling or buying rate. You will always buy money at a rate a few below the exchange rate. The 94 you mentioned would at best equate to a 90, maybe 91 for you to buy yen.
