16-29 April, any Cherry Blossom trees? 2005/2/4 23:04
16-29 April, any Cherry Blossom trees?

It depends where you will be.

If you are in Okinawa, it will be too late. If you are in Hokkaido, it will be too early.

If you will be in Tokyo, you will most likely be too late to see the cherry blossoms, unless it is a very late blooming year. Also, you will still be able to see some late blooming varieties of cherry trees here and there, but they are not very numerous. You have to know where to look for them. One good place in Tokyo is Shinjuku Gyoen or Koishikawa Botanical Garden.

If you are in Kyoto and it is a late blooming year, you may see the main cherry blossoms. Also, there are late blooming varieties in several places in Kyoto, for example, Hirano Shrine.

In Osaka, there are various late blooming cherry trees around the Mint Bureau.

The Tohoku region and higher elevations such as Nagano may be good places to see the "normal" cherry trees in the second half od April.

Should I travel 18-31 March OR 1-14 April? Which tour date is better, touring Tokyo; Takayama; Hiroshima and Kyoto. Thanks again

It is now still too early to make a forecast for this year. But judging from the average year, the first half of April offers a much higher probability of cherry blossoms than the second half of March.

In the average year, you can expect the best time for cherry blossom viewing to start around the following dates:

Tokyo: April 2
Kyoto: April 5
Hiroshima: April 3
Takayama: April 21

Again, the dates can vary by +/- two weeks from year to year.

The Japan Metrological Agency (or some branch office maybe, I got the site from their homepage) gives these temperature forecasts for fembruary-april.

If temperature alone is anything to go by it seems there's a higher chance of earlier than normal bloom than there is of a later than normal bloom this year... Of course as of yet, it's to be taken with a grain of salt, but perhaps it's an early indcation?

Does anyone have any new update on the Cherry Blossom Calendar in Tokyo?
I plan to go from Apr. 1 to Apr.5. Is this a good timing?

The various weather and travel pages are only just starting to re-organizing their cherry blossom forecast pages for this season, as forecasts start to become more precise. Many of them are not online yet. Here are two:

Furthermore, it strongly depends on where in Japan you intend to see the blossoms!

Tokyo, Nikko, Kanazawa, Nagoya 2007/2/8 09:11
I am visiting japan from 6th to 15. And I intend to cover Tokyo, Nikko, Kanazawa and Nagoya. What is a better sequence to visit these places to optimise my chance of viewing cherry blossoms at full bloom? tokyo first? or kanazawa first? does Nikko has nice cherry blossom sites?

If the weather keeps being so warm, cherry blossoms could open very early this year. In that case, it may already be somewhat late to see the blossoms in Tokyo and Nagoya, but Kanazawa could be nice.

In any case, I would go to Toko and Nagoya first, then to Kanazawa. As for Tokyo and Nagoya, they are usually in bloom at about the same time. So, I would select: Tokyo - Nagoya - Kanazawa

But if they open extremely early, it might actually be best to go to Kanazawa first to get any blossoms, at all.
