Visa type: International student

School sent CoE to Immigration around November 27th, 2022.

Still no word.

School move-in date: March 21st, 2023.

I am so stressed out. Especially with what I have to do before I can even go. I have to get 4 months of medications approved, and if I don't hear back until March...I won't be going.

Re: COE processing times 2023/1/23 15:09
Good day everyone. I just wanted to share my expereience when applying for our visa.
I have an INSTRUCTOR visa and been working here in Japan for about 5 years.

I just got married last July 2022, so I immediately apply for a DEPENDENT visa for my husband.

Date of application: September 12,2022
Place ofapplication: Takasaki, Gunma
COE approved date: January 19,2022

Its been 4 months and a week before I received my COE. I did not expect that it would take that long since they said it will only take 2-3 months after the application.

I always call the immigration for an update, but they keep on saying that I have to
wait longer since they do have A LOT of applications right now.
I recommend to hire a immigration lawyer if you want to expedite the process. It will only take
2 months to receive. I applied it by myself so I dont think my application is in the priority list.
Immigration will approve the ones with working visa first or student visas.

I only sent my emergency letter from the hospital thats why they approved it,
but probably if its not. It would take longer :(

But still happy that I got mine last saturday!!!
For those who are still waiting, always update or call the immigration it may help but not guaranteed.
God bless everyone! I hope your COEs will be issued soon!

Re: COE processing times 2023/1/25 15:53
Hello everyone!
I just received the good news!

My company received my CoE just a few minutes ago. They will send it to me, should be in my hands in a week or 10 days at max.
So i am updating here. Hope it helps!

Company applied for CoE: Last week of November 2022 (letfs say 25th of November because i am not sure exactly which day)
Company received my CoE: January 25th 2023

Place: Osaka
Visa Type: Humanities/Engineering
Ifll work as a teacher.

In total, from application to my company receiving my CoE, it took around 55-65 days.

I swear to god i felt like i was going crazy waiting for it to be issued. It is not an easy process. Good luck everyone, pretty sure youfll get yours soon too!

And i am really thankful for this thread because it helped me stay sane during this time. Not even joking lol

Oh and one last thing, during the processing they didnft ask me for extra documents, or didnft ask extra questions. I just waited for 2 months.

Another data-point, for a Specialist in Humanities/Engineering/Intl. Services visa (moving to Japan for a programming job):

- Company made the COE application on December 1st
- Received the COE on December 23rd

So just over three weeks.

Re: COE processing times 2023/1/27 08:58
I got accepted to a master's program at a national university in Tokyo and am supposed to begin classes in April 2023.

The university's COE office told me that they sent out my COE documents to immigration on 1/12/23.
They also told me that they think my COE will be issued within February.

Assuming they're right, this is a huge relief because I've been so worried that I wouldn't be able to get it in time to get a student visa before my classes begin.
I read about people here that have been waiting for 3+ months and it makes me really scared that I'll get expelled for not being able to enter the country in time!

Does anyone know if university students get some kind of expedited processing for the COE? I'm surprised my school's COE office sounds so confident that I'll get my COE that quickly.

Re: COE processing times 2023/1/27 09:05
@grapelord,
Your university office staff is right because students can get the COE within 3 to 4 weeks, and you will not be expelled even if your COE is late because Japan give priority to students' visas.
So, you should not be worried about your entering to Japan to start your study in the university.
Good luck...

Re: COE processing times 2023/1/29 16:56
If you apply this peruod of time; then probably iit can take longer than during covid period. Many people are applying for the CoE, which means that it takes longer time in order to review the application. Even eztension of residence period takes longer than it used to be. Probably, it depends also on how well the documents were prepared and type of the visa also matter as I believe. I hope that those who are waiting for their CoE, that you will get it soon!
