Re: Sanyo Shinkansen - JR Train Question 2020/3/3 00:04
Hi John B digs Japan,

Is there anyway to see the "Interval Timetable" on the Hyperdia mobile app? I don't see it and there no options for which you can configure in this app either. Just checking to see if you know something.

I don't use the mobile app because when I only had an iPhone, the app was expensive for what it was. Nowadays, in addition to the phone, I carry an iPad mini which works great as it synchs with the mobile wifi I get when I'm over there. I just bookmark the actual website on one of the browsers and that allows me to see the "interval timetable". But if I recall correctly, I could still click on the link for the timetable. It would open in another page or window.

Re: your itinerary and questions (1) 2020/3/3 05:28
Dear Sydney, when will you travel?

JR companies will revise some train timetables soon on March 14 (Saturday).
Currently HyperDia seems not to have renewed Shinkansen time data.

Four Shinkansen Hikari trains are scheduled
to depart from Kyoto and make a stop at Hiroshima,
three in the morning and one in the evening.

rkold:
in the evening, there are no direct trains

Actually there is one direct Hikari train to run in the evening
(HIKARI 521 from March 14, HIKARI 481 until March 13).
After leaving Kyoto,
this train makes a stop at every station.

When you travel with JR-West Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass,
(which is mentioned by a few posters,)
you travel on the conventional (=non-Shinkansen) line until Shin-Osaka,
you can take also Nozomi and Mizuho trains on the Sanyo Shinkansen and,
unless you pay the full amount of the Shinkansen surcharge
for your ride with your seat reserved,
you go without seat reservation.

Sydney:
If I decide to take Nozomi (non JR Pass) from Kyoto to Hiroshima,
can I get off at Kobe and hop back on a few days later?

Kobe Station is not served by the Shinkansen.
Shin-Kobe Station is the only Shinkansen station in Kobe City.
(JR conventional trains are unavailable there.)

With JR-West Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass,
you can go outside the JR gate of Shin-Kobe Station, hop back,
then head to Hiroshima.

When you travel with JR standard tickets
and you go outside the Shinkansen gate of Shin-Kobe Station,
you pay the Shinkansen surcharges
for the sections until and beyond Shin-Kobe
and the basic fare for the whole route.

Your JR basic-fare ticket
is issued for you to travel between Kyoto City Zone and Hiroshima City Zone.
On your way to Hiroshima,
you choose the first station from among stations in Kyoto City Zone,
and while you are in this zone, you do not go outside a JR gate (#);
you choose the last station from among stations in Hiroshima City Zone.
This ticket is good for 3 calendar days
and does not let you turn back or skip a part of the specified route.

(#)
For example,
if you choose Saga-Arashiyama Station as the first station,
you at Kyoto Station make a transfer inside the JR gates;
these two are stations in Kyoto City Zone.

Depending on your destinations in Kobe,
Sannomiya Station can be better for you to begin your trip from.

rkold:
It's on the Hankyu line and the conventional JR lines but NOT the shinkansen.

The Hankyu / Hanshin station in Sannomiya
was renamed as Kobe-Sannomiya Station
in December 2013 / April 2014.

JR conventional lines
: Sannomiya Station
Port Liner
: Sannomiya Station
Kobe City Subway Seishin-yamate Line
: Sannomiya Station
Kobe City Subway Kaigan Line
: Sannomiya-Hanadokeimae Station
Hankyu Kobe Line
: Kobe-Sannomiya Station
Hanshin Main Line
: Kobe-Sannomiya Station
