another option Tokyo to Kanazawa

Hyperdia gives another option of changing trains at Nagaoka, also only an 8 minute transfer, and only 8 minutes extra in travel time.
1. Is 8 minutes enough at Nagaoka?
2. Is this entirely covered by JR Pass?
3. Is the scenery as good, or is changing at Echigo-Yuzawa the more scenic route?
Many thanks..time and the non-JR line surcharge are not overly important to us: we are just after the best scenery!!

Yes, Kanazawa - Nagaoka - Omiya - Utsumomiya - Nikko is also fully covered by the rail pass. The scenery is interesting.
