you never know if the guy actually can drink alcohol, and many japanese find american sweets to be way too sweet to enjoy
i would recommend some hand made item that the receiver can keep and use for a long time and it will serve as a reminder of the business deal and business relationship every time he sees or uses the item.
a hand made fountain pen for example, or a hand made leather business card case with his name stamped on it (but not his company name just in case he changes companies in the future)
stuff like that

The Maple Sugar candies are very sweet, maybe yoo sweet. I like the business card idea, perhaps both, one for him and the sweets in case others in the company would want them.
