I found this website in the UK that ship all over the world; might be handy:

I was in a store yesterday with Yamazaki 12 and 17, and some of the older, more rare versions too - up to Y51,000 so US500 does not seem so outrageous.

Are you able to share the location/name/address of the store?

Or are you just teasing us....... ;-)

I'm in takayama now, and saw Yamazaki 12 for 12800 at a local grocery store. Seemed too expensive. I'd be very interested in finding that other store you were speaking of!

Re: Where to buy Yamazaki Single Malt Whiskey 2016/7/4 23:43
I can confirm for sure that getting any thing like Hibiki, YAMAZAKI, taketsuru with a year is almost like gold dust.
I live in Osaka city a stones throw from ShinOsaka JR and around my area there are large and small places. All of which I regularly visit weekly to check stock. Finally last week I found Hibiki 21 and Taketsuru 21. I was so happy!!!
I'm happy to be contacted if you don't want to spend your holiday searching for things you will not find.

Actually passing through Narita last week I saw several, but with a Y50,000 price tag. Aged are around, but you pay for it.

Re: Where to buy Yamazaki Single Malt Whiskey 2016/7/10 02:43
Ma found is a real gold mine!

Important info! Short and simple!

This shop has the 12 years Yamazaki (3 left) & Hakushu (2-3 left)
I also did see Hibiki 17 Years and a lot of other stuff!

Prices:
Yamazaki 12 years 12000yen
Hakushu 12 years 12000yen
Hibiki 17 Years 15000yen

I know this is a rip off because my friend brought the 12 years yamazaki for 10.000yen in Osaka but we all know that its a hard time now too find good prices and I promise that the prices will go up..

So the shop is close to the Asakusa temple!
One of the comments earlier did point it out but this is now verified by myself (10.07.16)

https://www.google.com/maps/place/%EF%BC%88%E6%A0%AA%EF%BC%89%E3%82%AB...

OBS! You can find Hakushu 12 years for about 9-8.000 yen in akihabara don quijote

Sincerely
Chris

Good luck!

Availability of Japanese whisky in Japan 2016/8/1 03:32
Here is an update on what whiskies can be found in Japan (as of July 31st 2016). I have just returned from travelling Japan for three weeks and checked availabilities on countless occasions, including distilleries (both Yamazaki and Nikka), specialist shops, department stores, liquor stores and others. I will list whiskies based on how rare they are to find and add prices where it matters.

EASY TO FIND

There is a bunch of NAS whiskies that can be found in ordinary convenience stores. Each convenience store normally has a small selection of 20 cl bottles and a few 70 cl bottles. Check out a few of them and you should find all the following:

Nikka Miyagikyo (NAS)
Nikka Yoichi (NAS)
Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt (NAS)
Suntory Hakushu (NAS)
Suntory Yamazaki (NAS)

Prices for 20 cl bottles vary between 1,000 and 1,400 yen. Nikka Coffey Malt and Nikka Coffey Grain are easy to find in department stores and liquor stores. No whiskies with an age-statement pop up in this category, unless you are interested in Nikka 12yr blended malt.

POSSIBLE TO FIND

If you are after the well-known brands with an age-statement, you could be lucky to find the following:

Suntory Hakushu 12yr (both as miniature and 70 cl bottle)
Suntory Yamazaki 12yr (mainly as 5 cl miniature)
Suntory Hibiki Japanese Harmony (NAS)
Suntory Hibiki 17yr (both as miniature and 70 cl bottle)

Hakushu 12 tends to be easier to find than Yamazaki 12, especially if you want to buy a 70 cl bottle (8,000-11,000 yen). 5 cl miniatures are an alternative (700-850 yen). Hibiki (NAS) costs about 5,000 yen and Hibiki 17yr between 11,000 and 17,000 yen (20,000 yen at Narita airport). 5 cl bottles of Hibiki 17 can be found for 800 yen. Focus on big department stores such as Bic Camera and others. Common liquor stores sometimes have one or two of the whiskies listed above.

HARD TO FIND

Now it becomes either difficult or expensive - or both. Liquors Hasegawa near Tokyo station (go to Yaesu central underground exit and proceed to the end of the T-shaped shopping area) is the first option here, but it is expensive!

Nikka Taketsuru 17yr
Suntory Hakushu 18yr
Suntory Yamazaki 12yr
Suntory Yamazaki 18yr
Suntory Hibiki 12yr (discontinued)

Liquors Hasegawa offered Yamazaki 12yr for 11,000 yen a bottle and Hakushu 18yr/Yamazaki 18yr for 45,800 yen a bottle. Some department stores have Yamazaki 12 for about 9,000 yen but in most places it is sold out. The discontinued Hibiki 12yr is difficult to find: I got 1 bottle from a liquor store in Abashiri (dusted shelves, last bottle) and to my surprise, there were some 50 cl bottles at Yamazaki distillery for sale. Not for long, I guess. Taketsuru 17 I saw twice, once in a department store near Shinjuku station and once in a liquor store in Hakodate. It costs between 7,000 and 8,000 yen.

Narita duty free is NOT the place to buy your whisky, the prices are for people who have more money than sense (50,000 yen for Hakushu 18yr/Yamazaki 18yr/Hibiki 21yr).

I got one bottle of Yamazaki 18yr at Yamazaki distillery but they sell it under the counter. If you do a tasting on 1st floor, be nice to the person in charge, taste the Yamazaki 18 and ask if you could buy a bottle. They make a phone call to the shop in 2nd floor and there you can get the bottle for 27,000 yen. Not sure if this works all the time, or if I was just lucky. They also have the 12yr under the counter.

IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND

Good luck to you if you are trying to find the following:

Nikka Miyagikyo 12yr
Nikka Yoichi 10yr / 12yr / 15 yr
Nikka Taketsuru 21yr
Suntory Yamazaki 25yr

All Nikka whiskies with an age-statement were discontinued in 2015 (except for Taketsuru 17 and 21) and I did not find a single bottle of them. Yamazaki 25 was sold out, even at Narita airport where it costs insane 250,000 yen.

Bottom line, if you are after a solid Japanese Single Malt with an age-statement, try to find a Yamazaki 12yr. In my opinion, the 18yr expression is only slightly better than its 6 years younger brother. Yamazaki 12 is an excellent choice, probably with the best price-quality ratio. However, the NAS Yamazaki is lacking cask influence and complexity.

Good luck to you! I hope that this was useful.

Re: Where to buy Yamazaki Single Malt Whiskey 2016/8/9 07:58
I just got back from a 2 week Tokyo and hit a bunch of places as well. I agree with everything you wrote except I'd categorize the Nikka Taketsuru 21 as "hard to find." I landed 2 bottles just outside Tokyo for an unbelievable price.

Couple other things. I thought the Yamazaki 2016 limited edition was sold out already but it is still being offered at some places. One bottle per person for 10000 yen but you need to have it delivered to you in Japan. Incredible deal. Also Lotte Duty Free offers a Hibiki Harmony Masters Select for 10000 yen. It's worth getting as it is a different blend from the regular harmony.

Re: Where to buy Yamazaki Single Malt Whiskey 2016/9/3 21:27
Just as an update/curiosity, yesterday while browsing in a store in Akasaka I saw some 12-yo Yamazaki for Y10,800 (Y10k plus tax). Labelled/aged vintages seam pretty rare/getting more rare.

I'm going to the Yamazaki distillery with guests on the 12th so it will be interesting to see if they are selling any direct from the factory.

Re: Where to buy Yamazaki Single Malt Whiskey 2016/9/12 17:41
And as a follow-up, no, there is no vintage Yamazaki available direct at the factory/distillery.

Interesting tour. Eventually they will bottle the whiskey hiding in the barrels from 1980 (there are a few), but that will be well out of my price range.

@Kiwiwhisky2016 - where do you get those from in Osaka? I'll be there in November, and hope to find some of those....

I recently found 2 bottles of taketsuru 25yr for 70k a bottle, bought them right away, and found 5 bottles of 2016 yamazaki limited so bought those as well. I am a local, and I have looked around but really getting hard to find Japanese whiskey at good prices. I feel for you all...

Which taste better, Yamazaki 12 y/o or Yamazaki limited edition 201 6. Also which is more expensive.

Re: Where to buy Yamazaki Single Malt Whiskey 2016/10/12 10:47
Hi,

Does anyone know if it is still possible to buy Hibiki 21 years or Yamazaki 18 years anywhere in Osaka, Kobe or Kyoto areas?

Or is it like searching for gold dust nowadays?
