June 6, 2017 - Trip to Kadogawa in Miyazaki-ken [The Komatsu Stone Tower Group]
The Komatsu Stone Tower Group is west of town near the banks of the Isuzu River. A rare, yellow-flowered mokusei tree (Fragrant Olive) stands at the edge of a cluster of dozens of small stone towers, most about three feet tall. Many have collapsed and are covered in moss. This shady spot is somewhat eerie but quite beautiful, especially if you come in the autumn to see the olive tree in bloom. Inscriptions bear dates going back to the late 15th century when there would have been a temple and a full size pagoda near the site. Be sure to stop by this ancient corner of Kadogawa after going for a swim in the river!
