On October 16, 2004, JR East, JR Tokai and JR West will implement several changes to their timetables. The changes tend to be minor and do not affect any of the shinkansen lines. Besides the JR timetable revision, October 2004 brings some major railway news for the Nagoya area.
Tokyo Area
JR Shonan Shinjuku Line - Drastic improvement of service

The timetable revision transforms the previously infrequent Shonan Shinjuku Line into one of central Tokyo's full-fledged railway lines, by almost doubling the number of daily round trips from 38 to 64. The Shonan Shinjuku Line provides access from Shinjuku to Yokohama, Kamakura, the Shonan area of Kanagawa Prefecture, as well as Saitama, Gunma and Tochigi Prefectures.

JR Saikyo Line - Increase of Rinkai Line trough services
|
The number of trains on the JR Saikyo Line, which provide through service to the Rinkai Line, is increased from 53 to 76 per day, further improving access from Shinjuku to Odaiba. The JR Saikyo Line in combination with the improved JR Shonan Shinjuku Line (see above), will now provide a more attractive, rapid alternative to the Yamanote Line between Ikebukuro and Osaki.

Introduction of green cars on several suburban JR lines
|
Green cars (first class cars) will be introduced on the Shonan Shinjuku Line, Utsunomiya Line and Takasaki Line. The green car fee for journeys below 50 kilometers will be 750 Yen (550 Yen on weekends and holidays) if purchased in advance. The green car seats are located in new 2-storied waggons.

Nagoya Area
Nagoya Subway - Completion of the loop line
|
The last section of the Meijo ("Nagoya Castle") Subway Line extension between Aratamabashi and Nagoya-Daigaku Stations was inaugurated on October 6, 2004, transforming the Meijo Subway Line into a loop line. The former branch of the Meijo Line from Kanayama to Nagoya Port was renamed Meiko Line.

Inauguration of the Aonami Line

On October 6, 2004, the Aonami Line, a new private railway line, has started operation between Nagoya Station and Kinjo Futo in the Nagoya Port area. The new line provides improved access to the Port Messe Nagoya exhibition complex and the residential areas along its route.
