Despite the fact that its inner grounds are currently closed to the public due to repair works, Kumamoto Castle remains the city's most popular cherry blossom spot. Nearly a thousand cherry trees are planted across the castle grounds and in the adjacent public parks.
30 minute tram ride from Kumamoto Station 400 yen, 7:30 to 18:00 (entry until 17:30)
About 150 cherry trees stand in Suizenji Koen, a beautiful Japanese landscape garden with central pond and a grass covered, miniature replica of Mount Fuji. Picnicking is allowed in designated areas of the park.
