Telephones are widely available in Japan. Private telephones are found in nearly every home and office, while pay phones are easy to find in public. Japan is also a world leader in mobile phone technology, and mobile phones have become a big part of Japanese society.

Japan uses unique cell phone networks, and as a result not all foreign phones will work. However, you can easily get a rental phone during your stay, or in most cities you can stop by an internet or manga cafe and use internet phones (VoIP). See also our page on internet access.
