2009/03/26 - Cherry Blossom Report: Nagasaki

Tateyama Park
March 26, 2009 - full bloom

Tateyama Park is located on a hillside overlooking northern Nagasaki City. The park's 700 trees are planted on terraces all along the hillside.

The terraces are popular spots for holding cherry blossom viewing parties (hanami). Additionally, many festival food vendors can be found around the observation deck at the top of the hill.

The cherry trees toward the bottom of the park have reached full bloom, while those at the top are rapidly approaching full bloom and should completely open in the next day or two. The park also has number of other varieties of cherry trees which have reached full bloom.

The park will be at its peak over the next week or so; however, this weekend's weather forecast has a chance of rain which may adversely affect the length of the cherry blossom season at Tateyama Park.

Inasayama Park
March 26, 2009 - opening (10-50%)

Inasayama Park is located on Mount Inasa, which overlooks Nagasaki City. It is a large park with about 350 cherry trees planted around it as well as on the slopes leading to an observation deck at the back of the park.

The trees in the park area are a popular place for cherry blossom viewing parties (hanami), while those along the path leading up to the observation deck are not well placed for hanami parties but can be enjoyed while walking through.

The trees of Inasayama Park have recently opened and it will not reach full bloom for at least a few more days. Some of the trees near the observation deck are earlier blooming varieties of cherry tree and have reached full bloom already. Unfortunately, the forecast for the weekend calls for cool weather and a chance of rain which may delay the full opening of the cherry blossoms.

Nagasaki Peace Park
March 26, 2009 - full bloom

The Nagasaki Peace Park in the north part of the city memorializes those who died when the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki during World War II. Around 200 cherry trees line the plaza of the Hypocenter Park.

The trees are planted on areas of grass around the wide plaza. It would be a good place to hold a cherry blossom viewing party under the shade of the trees, however there is no coverage of the plaza itself. More trees are located up toward the Atomic Bomb Museum, although there is not a lot of picnic area around there and they would be best enjoyed while walking through.

The cherry trees around the peace park have reached full bloom and should maintain their peak over the next few days. Unfortunately the weather forecast for Nagasaki predicts a chance of rain over the weekend which may shorten the length that the blossoms at the peace park are at their best.
