April 17, 2014 - Tokyo cherry blossom report

Having just returned to Tokyo from the Mt Fuji area where many cherry blossoms were just opening, I visited Shinjuku Gyoen park in the hope of catching some late blooming trees there. I was surprised and delighted to find large numbers of cherries in full bloom looking quite stunning in this beautiful setting.

Some of the paler pink varieties were starting to drop petals but the deeper pink cherries looked as if they were just reaching full bloom.

Of course many people were out enjoying Hanami in the sunny weather or just strolling around exploring the different gardens and the ponds with their traditional wooden bridges.

If the weather is kind there could still be a final opportunity to see some cherry trees in full bloom on the weekend at Shinjuku Gyoen.
