Rail pass or purchase tickets?

I would appreciate it if someone could let me know whether a rail pass of some description would be a cheaper option than purchasing tickets for the following:
Tokyo-Nikko-Tokyo
Tokyo-Takayama-Tokyo (staying 2 days)
Tokyo-Narita
the first two trips would be sometime within a 4-5 day period. The trip to the airport would be 3 days later.

You are not to going to be using many trains like I did. You won't need the pass. In my case, I bought 21-day green pass. I used JR trains about 2.6 times worth the price of pass.
