Can you advise me whether a JR pass can be used to travel inside Tokyo (i.e. between major centers)/ Thanks

yes, it can be used on all the JR lines in Tokyo, including the very useful Yamanote Line. But it cannot be used on the subway lines and other non-JR lines, inlcuding the Rinkai Line. It can be used on the Tokyo Monorail, though:
