Back to Japan: ideas for different itinerary 2013/3/22 17:17
Last October I spent two and a half wonderful weeks in Japan. As I half suspected would be the case, having longed to visit for so long, I was hooked. I always knew Ifd want to visit more than once, but our trip has so been in my thoughts that wefve just booked flights to go back for another two and a half weeks later this year. There are many other places we love to visit, but right now, I canft get Japan out of my mind!

To give you an overview of my first trip, herefs the itinerary (and a plug for Japan Guide): http://www.kaveyeats.com/2012/11/our-magical-holiday-in-japan-an-intro...

For our 2013 trip we have 19 nights to play with and I would welcome any suggestions about where we might go. Some thoughts:

We enjoyed the entire trip, but Kyoto was probably our favourite place. Whilst we did see and do a fair bit, illness meant we lost a day and a half and we had already excluded some attractions just because of our limited time. So wefre planning to go back to Kyoto for 5 nights.

Tokyo has so much to see and do and again, we only made a scratch. However, I think wefll restrict our Tokyo time to 2 nights on arrival and 2 before departure.

We loved both Takayama (we were there for the autumn festival) and Nara and we know wefve certainly not seen all or even most of what they have to offer, but have decided we wonft revisit these destinations on this trip. We spent a few hours in Hiroshima and one night on Miyajima. Again, we really enjoyed them, and know therefs more to see, but wefre not including either this time.

I didnft warm to Osaka, but we only spend half a day and an overnight there. I know itfs a foodie mecca, and food is a major focus of the trip, so Ifd like to give Osaka another chance. Ifm currently thinking of allocating 2 nights to Osaka, but would love your inputs on what we could do there. We enjoyed our afternoon at the cup noodle museum last time. We might visit the aquarium this time, but not really sure. I read about the fish market there, much smaller but more accessible than Tokyofs Tsukiji, and would be very interested in visiting if this is possible. Mostly I want to eat and drink local specialities during these days.

That leaves 8 nights to play with.

Ifve been reading about Kyushu and that certainly appeals. Wefre open to doing it by public transport or happy to rent a car and self-drive once wefve trained across from the East.

Or we could go North East from Tokyo to Nikko and explore Honshu or Hokkaido.

We wouldnft try and do more than one of those, as we like to travel slowly rather than flit around too much.

Wefre very happy to see more of rural Japan, but wefre not hikers and Ifm not brave enough to use shared onsen baths, especially single gender ones. So it depends on how accessible the attractions are and how we could fill our time wherever we go that will help me make the decision.

I would particularly like to visit areas which are famous for production of a food or drink item, whether itfs rice, sake, tea, a particular fish, seafood or meat, soy sauce, a type of pickle, whisky or beer, really anything at all food or drink. If therefs any way for me to arrange, via local tourist boards or any other way, to visit specific producers to learn about them in more detail, Ifd absolutely love to do this so I can write about them and share the experience. Hey, Ifm a blogger, itfs part of the enjoyment for me! (Indeed, Ifm still only half way through writing about the last trip, but determined to finish that before we leave for the next one!)

Any recommendations for our undecided 8 nights?

My personal favorite region is the Chugoku region, particularly Okayama Prefecture:
http://www.japan-guide.com/list/e1106.html

As far as food goes, here are just some specialties that I'm aware of in various cities:
-Utsunomiya: Gyoza
-Ise: Ise Udon and Ise Shrimp
-Matsusaka: Matsusaka Beef
-Kyoto: Yatsuhashi
-Uji: Green tea
-Omihachiman: Omi Beef
-Osaka: Okonomiyaki, Takoyaki
-Kobe: Kobe Beef
-Bizen: Bizen Curry
-Tsuyama: Senbei, Horumon udon
-Okayama: Demikatsudon, Mamakari, white peaches, muscat grapes, fruit parfaits
-Kurashiki: Bukkake udon
-Tottori: Pears, Crabs
-Izumo: Izumo Soba
-Hiroshima: Okonomiyaki
-Miyajima: Manju
-Shimonoseki: Fugu (blowfish)
-Takamatsu: Sanuki udon
-Kochi: Katsuo no Tataki
-Fukuoka: Hakata ramen
-Kumamoto: Horse meat

In terms of learning about production of foods/drinks, the Fushimi sake district of Kyoto has a museum about their famous wine. Kobe also has the Nada wine area.

Okayama has a Kirin Beer Park that can be toured with a reservation.

I know there are soy sauce museums around, as well, like a small one in Takahashi.

At the moment, I can't think of any more places where you can actually do tours to watch the production process but others will probably know.

Thanks so much, shall explore more.

I'm not looking necessarily for places that have a formalised tour option in place, but simply normal businesses that might be willing for me to visit, if they're able to speak English and don't mind taking a tiny bit of time out to talk about what they do to a stranger...

On your way to or from Kyoto, Toba is a nice detour. It is fanous for Mikimoto Pearl Island where you can see the whole process from the lady pearl divers to sorting, etc. You would probably need to spend one night there, but its a nice seaside area. Toba harbor is beautiful with several small islands. There is also a good aquarium there, and the famous Ise shrine is nearby.

Head to Tohoku and the Sanriku Coast. Visit Sendai, Matsushima, Ishinomaki, etc. See how the region has been affected by the tsunami two years on and aid in the rebuilding by eating and buying local products.

I'm not saying you have to spend your entire trip there, perhaps 2-3 days would suffice. It would be a shot in the arm for the local economy and a great way to help the morale of the region.

There are so many great places to discover.

I would recommend either Kyushu or Tohoku for now.

How about Iga City and its Ninja Museum?

It's a little out of the way, but if you're interested in the history of ninja, it's absolutely worth it :)

Hello
As I understand you want to return to Japan ..
This brings me back twenty years before when I went three weeks for the first time.
Since I can not do without this country. I go back almost every year for a month. This is just my second home because my wife is Japanese.

To answer your questions, I'll start by talking about Osaka.
We live well, eat well and have lots of fun in Osaka.
I think it is the most vibrant city in Japan. (I will make some unhappy ...)

What do you want to eat?
Okonomikaki. the traditional dish. I prepare myself at the restaurant.

http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie...

Takoyaki: to eat in the street... or at home.

http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie...

Tessa. The fugu sashimi.

http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie...

Or:
Ikayaki
yakiniku
Horumon
KIitsune udon
Hakozushi
Kayakugohan
Odamakimushi
Kushikatsu
If with all these specialties Osaka you can not find your happiness ...

The aquarium Kaiyukan is worth a visit. I went there twice.

http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie...

This Is certainly a unique place: Tsutenkaku tower. This is the heart of the city. The place where you can still find the original atmosphere of the city.

http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie...

To help you locate these places, here is the link ine interactive map of Osaka. On the blue dots, you have a few places that I love to Osaka.
http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie...

I'm not going to tell you about Kyoto ... this is my favorite. Otherwise I'll write several pages ...
I'll just leave the link to see some places I like in Kyoto.

http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie...

Nikko is a must. You have to go thére to admire the most beautiful temple of Japan! His name: TÔSHÔ-GÛ!

http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie...

If you are bored in Tokyo ... I doubt! Look what I saw ...

http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie...

If you like sake ... and want to see the best manufacturing of Kyoto:

Enjoy your trip!

If it's Oct. Nov. I'd seriously consider going to Tohoku to take advantage of the autumn colours.

Re: Back to Japan: ideas for different itinerary 2013/3/25 17:05
I second the Chuugoku region suggestion! There's more than just Hiroshima and Miyajima, as worth it as those places are. If you liked Kyoto and want to take it easy somewhere, Matsue may be good. It has a lot of the traditional culture and atmosphere Kyoto offers, but at a much more relaxed pace while still offering tourism city conveniences. It's also very close to Izumo (home of Izumo Taisha, the second most important Shinto shrine in Japan), Sakaiminato (home of Mizuki Shigeru, folklorist and writer of Gegege no Kitaro), and Yasugi (a good spot for hands-on folk culture).

My other suggestion is Tohoku, simply because they are in need of tourists to aid their recovery. I have not been there yet myself and cannot may any suggestions personally, but I'm hoping to take a trip out there within the next couple years.
