Is there any simpler way to go from Narita to Nikko than to go via Tokyo?

There is no direct bus to Nikko, but there is a direct bus to Utsunomiya (3 hours, 4050 yen one way) from where Nikko can be reached in a 45 minute train ride by the JR Nikko Line:
